Which players should compete in the 2013 Homerun Derby?

This year four people from the NL will take on 4 people from the AL to
see who is the best Homerun hitter in the MLB. Who will compete? Here's my opinion

Every year, the top power hitters come together for a competition to find out who is the best Home Run hitter in the MLB. This competition is called the Home run Derby, and one is held every year the night before the All-Star game. This year, the State Farm Home run Derby will be held the night before the All-Star game at Citi Field. Each league is represented by a captain who will represent their league in the Derby, and will pick three other players to team up with them and try to take out the other leagues team by hitting more Home runs. Who should the captains pick to represent their league? Here's my take:

                                                        National League

David Wright (Mets): David Wright is the captain of the National League's Homerun Derby team, therefore he will automatically taking part in the Derby on his own field. That is not to say he wouldn't be on the team if he wasn't the captain. Wright is tied for second on his team in Homeruns with 12 and is one of the premier hitters in the league. Every time Wright steps up to the plate he is a legitimate threat to hit a homerun, and that is why he is the captain of his leagues team.

Carlos Gonzalez (Rockies): Carlos Gonzalez plays left field for the Rockies, but his defense is not the reason he should participate in the Homerun Derby. Carlos made his mark last year in the Homerun Derby by hitting a number of bombs, but did not hit enough to win. Gonzalez is one of this years top homerun hitters in the National League as he sits tied for the most homeruns in the NL with a total of 21. Every time he steps to the plate, the opposing has to watch what he throws, because if he misses his spot by even a little, he might pay for it by getting to watch the ball fly into the seats.

Dominic Brown (Phillies): This pick may come as a surprise to some, but I think Dominic Brown deserves a spot to compete in this years competition. Brown has made his presence known numerous when he has stepped up to the plate as he is tied with Carlos Gonzalez for the league lead in homeruns as he also has 21. Brown is a very solid fastball hitter, and he has made a lot of pitchers find that out the hard way this first half of the season.

Carlos Beltran (Cardinals): Carlos Beltran is one of the best power hitters of his time, and therefore he also deserves one of the four NL spots in this years Homerun Derby. As one of this years best power hitters, Beltran sits tied for 5th in the National league in Homeruns with Jay Bruce as he has a total of 18. Beltran is the best power hitter on the Cardinals, and is one of the best in his league, because of this, he deserves the finals spot in my team of four.

                                                 American League

Robinson Cano (Yankees): Like David Wright of the National league, Robinson Cano is the captain of his American League and will pick his team. Because of this, he will definitely be on it. Who he will pick remains to be seen but Cano will be, and deserves to compete. Cano won the Derby two years ago in Arizona, and will definitely be in the running to win again this year. This season so far, Cano has hit a team leading 17 Homers this year. Will that be enough to make his mark and potentially win the derby this year? We'll find out soon.

Chris Davis (Orioles): This was without a doubt the easiest pick of them all. Chris Davis is leading not only his team, not only his league, but the entire MLB in homeruns this season with 31. If he competes, Davis will easily be the favorite to win. One thing is for sure, if Chris Davis competes in this years HomeRun Derby, we will be sure to see some long homers.

Miguel Cabrera (Tigers): This was another easy pick. Cabrera lead his entire league in Homeruns last year (and also won the Triple Crown by doing so with his average and RBI numbers) and is second only to Chris Davis in Homers this year with a total of 25 up to this point in the season. If Cabrera competes, he would certainly be one of the very talented long ball hitters in the American League with a very good chance of winning the whole thing

Edwin Encarnacion (Blue Jays): As you can see, Edwin Encarnacion has gotten my final spot in this team of four, as he deserves to. Encarnacion sits ranked third in the American League behind Davis and Cabrera respectively with a total of 23 bombs this year. Encarnacion has had a very solid season power wise, and would look to continue that if he was invited to compete, and would accept the invitation. With his very powerful team, and the opponents against him, Encarnacion would have a very outside chance of winning the Derby. However, that is why we play the games, and that is why we do the competitions. So even if his chances are slim, he still has them.

Above are the players that I think should compete in this years State Farm Homerun Derby, and whether you agree with my choices or not, these are definitely all players who should be taken into consideration. Will  all these players get to compete? I don't know, and we'll have to wait to find out. Feel free to leave your opinions in the comments below, because I'd love to hear them.
